Enhancing Game Accessibility: Translating or Creating Audio Descriptions
Video gaming is a globally popular form of entertainment, but visually impaired individuals often face challenges in accessing most games. Audio description (AD) helps by converting visual elements into spoken words, making games accessible to those with vision loss. While translating AD scripts for films and TV has been proposed as a cost-effective strategy across languages and cultures, AD for video games remains underexplored. This talk discusses methods for creating and translating audio descriptions for video games to enhance accessibility across different languages and cultures. It addresses four key research questions: whether translating AD is more cost-effective and time-efficient than creating it from scratch, the differences between translated AD scripts and those created directly in the target language, the challenges involved in translating and creating AD for games, and the preferences of game players regarding different AD versions.
Dr Xiaochun Zhang is a Lecturer in Translation Studies at University College London, specializing in video game localization and accessibility. She has published over 40 articles and book chapters in leading academic journals and with university publishers. Dr Zhang has led and participated in more than ten research projects, including national and international consortiums across Europe and China, with funding from the British Academy, Research England, and the European Commission. Currently, she is working on the AIAD project, aiming to enhance accessibility and inclusivity in video games through AI-facilitated audio descriptions.
